2012 Olympic Games to be nuclear powered
The London 2012 Olympic Park in the east of the capital is set to be powered by nuclear energy. French behemoth EDF and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) hope to finalise an agreement on the powering of the Games before the end of next month.
London 2012 aims to be the greenest Olympics ever held, and the parties are finalising the low-carbon energy mix. EDF, one of the main sponsors of the games, is expected to use a mixture of nuclear and wind-generated energy.
The balance of that mix and the length of time that EDF will fuel the park is being finalised now. However, it is thought that the agreement will last from next year to shortly after the closing ceremony.
Locog signed the energy supply deal with EDF in 2007 but both sides agreed to thrash out the finer details closer to the event.
A Locog spokesman said: "EDF Energy aims to create a bespoke low carbon package for the Games which we are discussing with them."
