Relocated solar projects to retain government subsidies

New government plans mean that, from summer 2019, medium and large solar PV installations will be able to be move to different locations without losing the support from the government’s Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme.
At present, installations lose subsidies from the FiT scheme if they are relocated. This, the government believes, has increased businesses’ reluctance to install the solar panels. Reforms to the FiT scheme, confirmed on 20 March, will mean that landlords and tenants who cannot guarantee being in the same building throughout the life of the project will be able to move their installation and retain support.
The reforms are a part of the government’s strategy for transitioning solar deployment from ground-based systems to rooftops. Government figures project that the UK has around 250,000 hectares of south-facing commercial rooftops and consequently a significant potential for generation.
