St Johns School

Steve and Eric with Geoff at St John's School, achieving savings almost as impressive as the buildings!

St John's School was founded by a clergyman in 1851, to offer free education for sons of poor clergymen and to provide a choir for his large church. Today, St John's is a community of 580 pupils, a mixture of day pupils and boarders, and continues to remain loyal to the principles of its foundation by offering subsidised education to the sons and daughters of clergymen.

Strong growth is reflected in terms of the facilities now offered to pupils, with a new development providing purpose-built workshops for Design & Technology, art studios and general teaching rooms. A new Library is also part of the complex.

Managing the facilities is the Bursary team, headed by Julia Maynard. With such development underway, improving costs without impacting on service was of vital importance. Julia first met Eric Tiv in 2008 at the Edinburgh ISBA Conference, and after a second meeting at the next year's conference Utilitas were asked to work with St John’s on some key areas of expenditure.

Of primary concern was energy, reflected in annual expenditure of almost £240,000 on gas and electricity for the school. The first task was a full site survey and detailed analysis of energy usage in the different parts of the school. Armed with this information in-depth analysis of historic billing was then undertaken. Utilitas has extensive knowledge of energy markets, billing analysis and how charges are structured and invoiced and because of this, they were able to unearth rebates of nearly £100,000. While this analysis was underway, Utilitas also handled the renewal negotiations; a price was sought from the incumbent broker, and tender responses were compared.

In the first year alone, Utilitas were able to demonstrate £140,000 in savings. In addition to the near £100,000 rebates, the tendering exercise and further savings on charging structures reaped annual savings of £42,000.

St John’s School is continually developing and expanding and in 2010 a new classroom block was near completion and refurbishment of one of the boarding houses was also underway.  The school had already arranged the supply infrastructure and metering for the classroom block, but Utilitas was asked to investigate the price offered for the gas supply. Utilitas then helped install a new meter and attain a very competitive supply contract in the boarding house - more savings were to be had.

As other supplies came out of contract, Utilitas continued their analytical approach to tendering and invoice validation and across the school’s portfolio of 10 electricity and 14 gas meters Utilitas achieved savings of nearly £240,000 within 3 years

Utilitas are now in discussions with the school to audit other areas including photocopying and waste, with the aim of uncovering further savings for St John's School. Julia Maynard and Geoff Arthur, who handle these areas, have been very happy with the service from Utilitas.

“We've received fantastic results by using Utilitas. I'd like to thank them for their input and results, and for assisting when we've had energy-related issues, including supply and meter installations, over the last couple of years.”
