Business environmental update

A brief update on new environmental regulation changes.

Producer responsibility one stop shop

You can now find guidance on how to comply with four different producer responsibility regimes in one place.

The Environment Agency has created a new producer responsibility section on its website and simplified content so you can find guidance more easily. Find out how to comply when disposing of:

• packaging
• electrical and electronic equipment
• batteries
• end of life vehicles

Updated WEEE guidance

We have updated guidance on issuing WEEE evidence and WEEE protocols (GN04).

This guidance will help approved authorised treatment facilities, producer compliance schemes, approved exporters and producers of WEEE understand:

• the rules on issuing WEEE evidence notes
• testing and repair for reuse of WEEE
• requirements for the treatment of WEEE
• accounting for batteries in WEEE
• how to use the National WEEE Protocols
• how to demonstrate recovery and reuse targets have been met

The guidance now also includes guidance on the type and quantities of business to business WEEE that could be classified as business to consumer.

Warning: disposal of fridges

An Environment Agency study has concluded that fridge insulation foam produced using a hydrocarbon blowing agent should be considered highly flammable, unless tested and demonstrated otherwise.

Discarded fridges and freezers containing this foam should be classified and consigned as hazardous waste (that is discarded equipment containing hazardous components). This will help ensure that waste fridges are managed safely and prevent fires at fridge treatment and storage sites.
