Concerns have been raised that UK businesses are insufficiently prepared for one of the government’s key energy efficiency programmes: the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS).
The Environment Agency said on 29 May that only 32 UK businesses had so far confirmed their compliance with ESOS for the scheme’s first phase, out of 14,000 companies that are required to carry out an energy audit by the December deadline. The agency said it feared that, with only 700 lead assessors employed and 99.8% of businesses non-compliant, the organisation could be overwhelmed as the compliance deadline nears.
Meanwhile, a survey released on 26 May found that 6 out of 10 (60%) businesses had not budgeted for ESOS, and that nearly 4 out of 10 (37%) would have liked “more time to get their heads around the scheme”.
The Environment Agency has published guidance to help organisations check if they are eligible for ESOS participation.

If you haven't yet appointed a Lead Assessor, please do get in touch with Utilitas Solutions as soon as you can and we will help guide you through the assessment process and ensure your company is not one of those fined by the department for energy and climate change.
